River Run - West Side

Well we played 11 holes last night at River Run. The West course was pretty nice. Some of the greens needed some work, but overall it was a quality course. It was also my brother-in-law’s first real course and he played great. A 54 on the front for a first time is excellent. Infact it was less than me. Rodney also had a great day collecting his first three pars. With a 50 overall. That is another impressive total.

The price was right on a weekend after 4pm, we paid $18 with cart. That is not bad at all, especially since Maxwell wouldn’t let my nephew on the course.

The course was not extremely challenging with few bunkers or water hazards on the front 9, however we did not see 11-17. They did have a good mix of par 5s and par 3s which makes it more fun.

Overall, I give the course a 6 on my scale of 1 to 10.

Golf rules for beginners:

1) Back straight, knees bent, feet shoulder width apart.
2) Form a loose grip.
3) Keep your head down.
4) Avoid a quick back swing.
5) Stay out of the water.
6) Try not to hit anyone.
7) If you are taking too long, please let others go ahead of you.
8) Don’t stand directly in front of others.
9) Quiet please … while others are preparing to go.
10) Don’t take extra strokes.

Now, that’s very good. Flush the urinal, go outside, and tee off.

The Memorial Day Classic?

The par 70 course could barely contain me.  After crushing the front 9 with a monstrous 55, we stopped at the club house for some liquid nourishment.  A breakfast beer was all I needed to clean up my stroke and on the backside I was able to slip out with a 100 over 18.  The back 9 was short with the previously mentioned lack of par 5s, however, my drives were longer and the chipping was much improved.  Even Rodney shot better on the back.  Jimmie was able to smoke us, but he knows the course… homefield advantage.  I will post a few more highlights of the round later…

Florida Vacation

Over Memorial Day Weekend, Rodney and I got together with his brother-in-law, Jimmie, to play a round of golf while we were in Florida.  This trip like all the rest was a working vacation, but we were able to sneak away Saturday morning to play the neighborhood course — The Triple S Golf Ranch.  I have only heard that it was a swamp… but Jimmie plays it pretty often so we went.

It was much nicer than I expected.  From what I had heard from others that the course was run down and poorly managed.  However, it was quite the opposite.  The greens were great and the fairways were nice.  There was no real rough on the course.  The course was relatively unchallenging.  No long holes (5,410 yards), no par 5s on the back 9, no sand traps, and only a couple water hazards that had to be crossed.  On the plus side, it was only $18 with a cart on the weekend to play 18.  That makes playing the course way better in my book and the location was less than a mile from Rodney’s Mother-in-law’s house which is where we were staying.

There were a couple of problems with the whole experience.  One was the lack of a driving range or chipping area to hone my skills before teeing off.  Although, they do have a putting green and a little raggedy driving net that makes up for it [/sarcasm].  The club house was not stocked very well with supplies, but they did have the essentials.  Balls and beer.  The worst offense… THEY DON’T TAKE CREDIT CARDS!!!  What a tragedy.

Overall, I give the course a 5 on my scale of 1 to 10.

Par….

Well the Semi-Annual DISA Golf Tournament was played Friday and was a complete success. My team, which consisted of Rodney, Cody Steadman, his wife Sally, and myself shot a par 72. This was great for us and we hop to have more games like that without it being best-ball, scramble scoring.

It was a fun day and our Boss loved the event. Hopefully, we can do it again in the fall.
