Randy, Rodney, and I set out to play The Falls course at Magnolia GC in Mobile, which is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The course was very secluded and a bit hard to find. Once we made our way through the back roads we hit Magnolia Drive and immediately could tell we were at an RTJ course. The grass was great, the road was nicer, and the course looked awesome. The club house was pretty decent and the drop-off was just as Capital Hill. A definite clone of the Capital hill club. On to the golf.
On the front nine, one golfer excelled in most phases of the game — and his name was Yoko. My driving was superb and the chipping was working. Putting was my one weak link on the first eight holes, missing an Eagle and Birdie putt. However, with a Bird and a Par on the scorecard, a record low score was in line… except when I reached the ninth hole something changed. As I walked to the tee box, I decided to enjoy a delicious Quaker Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bar. BIG mistake!@1… I cranked a drive to the trees on the right. The next 10 holes were mostly a collection of worse tee shots followed by bad long iron shots.. YUK!. On my birdie hole, I hit a nice straight drive to the 200 yard marker and hit a brilliant 4 iron shot 20 feet from the pin– a 2 putt bird. The next hole was a nice Gap Wedge 145 yard shot to the green– a 2 putt par. Other than that I sucked. 54 on the front. 67 on the back. YUK…
The course itself was above average. Nice bunkers, great scenery, and a good challenge. Rodney and randy, both scored well 120 and 114 respectively. Randy and Rodney both had some really good drives out there, but Rodney was suffering from some pain which limited his enjoyment.
Overall, I’d give the course a 7 on the 1 to 10 Yoko-Golf-O-Meter.
